Mrs. Eliza Hand, of Burgaw, in Pen der county, on Monday last, attained the remarkable age of 84 years, and the anni veraay of her birthday was celebrated by her largo circle of relatives and friends by a dinner given m her honor at the resi- dence of her son in law, R. The charming little operet of Red Riding Hood waa produced last nitht at the Opera House to one of the largest and most fashionable audiences ever assem bled within the walls ot that building. We remember but one ocean ion equal to it. and that was when Edward Everett delivered hia address here in behalf of the Ladies Association for the erection of the Washington Monument, and that was, see think, about twenty-two years - ago. The Operetta last n'ght was charming ly produced. There were In all some 150 ladies and rmtlmeri and children taking part the children, however, belnj in the ascendants. We do not propose hero to follow out- the details of the piece nor can' we particul terize in our report. All did well-md many of them more than well from the oldest young ladies yet in their teens, to the, tiny little faries who bad not yet entered theirs, aod who, young as they were, two of them being bnt five years of age threw all of their youthful little souls into the parts they -represented. Tbe rendi tion occupied about two and a half hours, and this time would have been reduced somewhat, but for a stage-wait now and then which, however, we are i ure " was entirely unadvoidable, and because, of the want of more time in which- to perfect the children in their parts, the Operetta having been produced isomewh it 'earlier than was at first intended, because of the other engagements for the Opera House which interposed between this and Ash Wednesday. An especially noticeable feature was the costumes of the young ladies and the children. They were elaborate and care fully made up, with a fall view to the effects of the piece, and yet they were net costly. The exercises, marching, dancing, Sec, were admirable, as were also the grouping! and the tableaux with which each act was closed. The gentlemen of the Cornet Concert CQb,cwea4j..th."4atid to good work, were to the orchestra aad dis coursed some of their sweetest music in the intervals of the performance, the stage music having been furnished by piano, violin and base viol. The receipts of the evening were, in all, about $325,' from which amount some $50 or $60 will be deducted for expenses. The balance will go to the benefit of St. John's church, for. which the entertain ment was given. Save your money by buying your Build ing Supplies from Altafier & Price. t A Repetition Demanded. We understand that a number of gentle-. men in this city, appreciating the beauty of the;Operetta of Little Red Biding Hood, as it was rendered last evening, have ad. dressed a note to Hisses Burr and James, under whose management it was pro duced, requesting them to give a repeti tion of the entertainment. Tbe ladies have not yet decided upon tbe matter but an answer will be returned as soon as a decision is rendered, when tbe corres pondence will be published. There were many yesterday, principally among those who failed to obtaia good seats for last evening, who earnestly requested that a repetition might be Had. Kicking In the Traces. The Republicans bod a grand pow wow last night in the First Ward, at which there was a lively time. Some very vig orous resolutions were adopted censuring the State Executive Committee for their action at Raleigh on Thursday to ap pointing Mr. W. P. Canaday, one of the big chiefs of the party in this city and State, as delegate to the Chicago Conven tion, inasmuch as it is claimed that Mr. C. does not represent tbe sentiment of the partj heie in regard to tbe Presi dential nomination. Mr. Canaday, be it undera ood, is a Sherman man and it -is claimed that Grant and Blaine hereabouts' are both 'pre ferred to Sherman. Hon. ' Daniel , L Russell, the Greenback Congressman from this district, was endorsed by the meeting as the choice of the people of this district as delegate to the" Convention. There seems to be mu:h feeling in the matter hereabouts and it is evident that the end is net yet. Wilmington, N. 0., Jan. 80th, 1880. 2 the Editor of The Dmihi Review : Ms. HniTon: It Is seldom that I ventare to thrust my opinion upon political matters before he public, but reading your excellent ar ticle last evening on The Coming Cam paiga,' I am emboldened to say a word or two to support of the Hon. Daniel G. Fowls for the office of Governor. You are indeed right to tout conlecture that 'the Republics party in, this State is not dead as seme so fondly imagine.' This being true, then it behooves the Democratic party to bring , to the front their main strength their stroaeest man. and I believe I express the sentiments of almost the entire upper and lower Cape Fear section in saying that success will certainly attend us, with Paiie! G.j Fowle as our standard, bearer. There is no use in calling a stave a pickaxe.' Governor . Jarvis is not tho choice of the Gape Fear section. I will wager a bet now that Judge Fowle will be nominated on tbe first ballot ia tb Convention; and the Radicals may nomi nate Buxtoo, or Dr. Grissom. oi whoever they please; but Daniel will bring them to judgment on electian day. Fowle can beat any man the radicals can muster for the contest, . Tbe people of North Caro Una have mot forgotten the herculean work h did in the last election tor Governor, when by bis bold and manly fight, and his powerful eloquence, be was largely in strumental in placing Got. Jarvis where he now is. The suae ia near at hand and I think the sooner we hoist our flag with our chaapion at the masthead, the more ore win we be of the victory. Then three cheers for the Hon.
